Being pursued while your legs refuse to move is read as avoidance meeting its limit — in the East a debt that can no longer be outpaced, in the West the Shadow closing in as the ego exhausts itself, in Ibn Sirin's tradition a pressing matter that must now be faced.
Three readings
In Chinese tradition · 周公解梦
In the 周公解梦 frame, to be pursued is to owe — something circling back until it is met. Legs that will not run mean the debt has caught up: the season of postponement is over. The tradition reads the paralysis not as doom but as arrival — the moment the matter insists on being settled, and running was never going to settle it.
The dream stages what psychologists call the futile-flight motif: the pursuer is a disowned part of yourself, and the failing legs are the truth that you cannot outrun what you are. Jung's counsel is exact here — turn around. In dreamwork, facing the pursuer often transforms it; what chases you wants to be integrated, not escaped. The paralysis is the psyche removing the option of avoidance.
Ibn Sirin read pursuit as a pressing matter — a debt, an adversary, an unpaid worry. To be unable to flee marks the matter as due: no further postponement will be granted. Read as meaning, the dream is unusually direct — what you have been keeping ahead of has reached you, and the way through is to turn and meet it.
Physiologically, REM sleep paralyzes the large muscles, and the dream sometimes reads that stillness as failed running. Symbolically, all three traditions agree on what the mind does with it: the thing you are avoiding can no longer be outrun.
What does it mean if I never see who is chasing me?
An unseen pursuer is read as an unnamed one — anxiety without a face, or a matter you have refused to look at directly. Naming what it could be, awake, often drains the dream's charge.
What happens if I stop and face the chaser?
In both dreamwork and tradition, turning to face the pursuer is the resolution the dream is asking for — chasers confronted often shrink, transform, or speak. The waking equivalent is addressing the avoided matter.
This is the general reading. Your dream is specific.
