Dreaming about a dragon

A reading for meaning, not prophecy

The dragon is among the most powerful of all dream symbols — in the East the supreme omen of fortune and rising power (龙), in the West the guardian of the treasure and the Shadow to be faced, in Ibn Sirin's tradition a great and formidable power.

Three readings

In Chinese tradition · 周公解梦 · 龙

In 周公解梦 the dragon (龙) is the most auspicious of all symbols — imperial power, ascent, and 飞黄腾达, the sudden soaring of one's fortune. To see a dragon rise is read as a leap in station or a great opportunity approaching; to ride one, as fortune firmly in hand. Few dreams are read as more favorable in the Chinese tradition.

In Western psychology · Jungian

Jung read the dragon as the guardian at the mouth of the cave — the fearsome shape the unconscious takes over the treasure it protects, which is the Self. To face the dragon is the hero's central ordeal; to slay or befriend it wins the gold of new consciousness. It can also be the devouring unconscious one must not be swallowed by.

In Islam · Ibn Sirin

In classical ta'bir a great serpent or dragon (tinnīn) signifies a formidable power or a mighty adversary — its scale the measure of what one faces. To overcome it is read as prevailing over that force. Framed as meaning: what large power in your life are you being called to meet rather than flee?

Questions people ask

Is dreaming about a dragon good luck?

In the Chinese 周公解梦 tradition, yes — the dragon (龙) is the most auspicious of all symbols, a sign of rising fortune, power, and sudden ascent. The other traditions read it as a great force to face rather than simple luck.

What does a dragon mean spiritually in a dream?

Spiritually the dragon is the guardian at the mouth of the cave — the fearsome shape guarding a treasure, which is the Self. To face or befriend it is the hero's ordeal that wins new consciousness.

What does it mean to dream about a dragon chasing you?

Read as a large power or challenge you are fleeing rather than meeting — its size the measure of what feels overwhelming. The dream stages the pursuit so that, eventually, you turn and face it.
