In the Eastern reading the spider is the patient weaver — 网, the web of circumstance you are spinning around yourself. Calmly watching the spider is read as mastery of your affairs; tangled in the web, as entanglement in a situation of your own making.
Jung read the spider as the Great Mother in her ambivalent form — creator and devourer — and as the web of the psyche itself. It can mark a feeling of being caught, or the creative power to weave your own pattern; fear of it points to a disowned instinctive force.
Ibn Sirin associated the spider with a weak or untrustworthy person, and its web with a frail shelter. Framed as meaning: where are you relying on something flimsier than it looks?
