In every tradition, water's clarity is its verdict. Dirty water is read as feeling or fortune contaminated — in the East wealth and flow gone murky, in the West emotion clouded by what has been allowed into it, in Ibn Sirin's tradition trouble, unlawful gain, or affliction by degree of filth.
Three readings
In Chinese tradition · 周公解梦
The Chinese frame reads water as wealth and feeling in motion — and murk as contamination of the current: gains with something wrong in them, relationships silted with the unsaid, a season's flow carrying debris. Classical entries read muddy water toward obstruction and disputes, clearing water toward matters resolving. The tradition's question is upstream: what has been emptying into your current that does not belong there?
Emotion is the water; the dirt is what has been allowed into it. Dreaming of murky, fouled water marks feeling contaminated — resentment in the love, dread in the ambition, someone else's mess in your channel. Swimming in it, drinking it, or watching it rise distinguish exposure from ingestion from threat. The dream's cleanness test is uncomfortably precise: dreamers usually know exactly what the pollution is, the moment they ask.
Ibn Sirin's tradition reads water by state with great care: clear water toward life, lawful provision, and blessing; murky or stagnant water toward affliction, unlawful gain, or troubled matters — drinking it, taking the trouble in. As meaning: something in your provision, dealings, or heart has an impurity in it — the dream grades the water honestly and asks you to trace the source.
Immersion reads as living inside the contaminated situation — working, loving, or operating within something compromised. The dream asks how long you have been calling the murk normal.
What about drinking dirty water?
Ingestion is the strongest form: taking the contaminated thing in — tainted gain, poisoned words, a compromise swallowed. Ibn Sirin's tradition reads it toward trouble taken into oneself; the counsel is to stop drinking.
What if the water clears in the dream?
Clearing water is one of dream-language's most hopeful images: the matter resolving, the truth settling out, feeling purifying. Traditions read it toward disputes ending and provision turning lawful and clean.
This is the general reading. Your dream is specific.
